Son of Gov. William & Sophia Eliza (D'ANTIGNAC) SCHLEY. Married Mary Flournoy PIERCE, who predeceased him. Father.

"Dr. William SCHLEY. // The Columbus Enquirer announces the death of Dr. Wm. SCHLEY, a highly esteemed and scholarly gentleman, which occurred in that city. His age was about 65 years. HE had been a practicing physician for forty-five years, and was considered a very able man in his profession. He was born in or near Augusta, and moved to Columbus about thirty-five years ago. He was a son of ex-Governor SCHLEY, of Georgia, who was once a Foreign Minister, Secretary of War and United States Senator. He was a fine specimen of a man--both in physique and in the many traits which endear one to his fellows. He was generous and genial, charitable to the poor and kindly disposed to the brethren of his profession, from whom he would not in any way attempt to detract. His characteristics were noble and always prompted him to such demeanor in the social world as bespoke true manhood, infused with the heart's most generous blood. He married Miss PIERCE, a daughter of Dr. Lovic PIERCE. He leaves three daughters to mourn his loss." [Augusta (GA) Chronicle newspaper, Friday, 18 MAY 1877, p. 4.]

Mary Jane Galer's list of persons buried in the Old Cemetery section of Linwood shows: W. K. SCHLEY died of cancer; interred 16 MAY 1877 - Sexton Abraham ODOM. Original burial entry in the sexton's ledger book shows he was buried as a resident of Columbus.

This grave is apparently not identifiably marked. Presumably in Dolores Autry's Section I, Lot 26, where his wife and other family members are buried -- see her "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book (edited by Dowd & others), Volume 3, pp. 69-70.

On the 1850 census of Columbus, GA, William & Mary had 4 children with them: Anna (10), William (8), Charlotte (6) & Sarah (4). In 1860, they are all still with their parents: Anna P. (20), William (18), Charlot T. (16) & Sally C. (14). Anna P. SCHLEY m. 26 FEB 1863 in Muscogee County, GA, to Seaborn J. HOWARD. The son William died in 1869. Charlotte (25) & Sarah (24) are still single and residing with their father on the 1870 census of Columbus.
