Born in West Hartlepool and orphaned aged 7, Ernest arrived in Canada with his aunt and siblings in 1912 settling in Winnipeg. Enlisting in the CEF with his brother Roland in 1914, Ernest was wounded at Festubert in 1915 and had his leg amputated.
