He was born February 15, 1928 in Cloquet to Elizabeth and Walfred Esala. Jim attended Cloquet Public Schools and Brights School of Floral Design. His variety of work experiences include crew member on Great Lakes freighters, running Esala Florist, salesman and construction worker. His life story was chronicled in the book "Finding Shirley:" Most important in his life was service to the Lord, ministering to people in the marketplace of everyday life. Jim had proudly served his country as a WWII veteran in the US Navy, enlisting when still a teenager.

Jim is survived by and will be missed by his wife of 32 years, Chery (maiden name Soukkala); brother, Bud (Jennie); and many other relatives and friends. Thank you to the staff of St. Luke's Hospital and Rehab, Inter-Faith Care Center, Pine View Apartments, Dr. David Sproat and staff for their care of Jim in recent years. Special thanks to family and friends who helped in numerous ways with Jim's care. Most of all..."Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." I Corinthians 15:57. "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5-6.
