Captain John Calvert served with the 5th Kentucky Mounted Infantry from New Liberty, Owen County, Kentucky. He served from October 1862 until the battle of Chicamauga where he was wounded below the knee on his left leg on October 2, 1863. The doctors decided to amputate the leg, and he became steadily worse after the operation.
