It was there she met her husband, lawyer George W. McKeaig. They were married 19 Oct 1852, and appear at that place on the 1860 census enumerated with their two eldest children, Loree Elizabeth 'Lizzie,' and William; and also her mother, Elizabeth. Her second daughter, Mary B. 'Mamie' was also born while the family was at Shawneetown.
Her husband was discharged from his Civil War service in 1865, and the following spring moved the family to Cairo.
The 1870 census shows she had lost her son William, and that her mother was no longer part of their household.
The family lived at 410 Washington Avenue, and by the 1880 census had taken in as a boarder the German-born weather reporter, Joseph Mueller, who would soon marry their daughter Lizzie.
In 1890, daughter Mamie married banker Ellis Cox, and by 1897 both daughters were residing at Cairo with children of their own.
The month following the death of her husband, Lora was at home with her daughters and their offspring, reading to her three grandchildren by the light of an oil lamp on the table next to her. The table was accidentally jostled, causing the lamp to overturn and break, igniting her clothing.
Daughter Lizzie rushed to her aid and was herself badly burned in extinguishing the flames. Lora's burns were severe enough that shock set in, and she succumbed to her injuries the following morning.
(Note 1: She appears as 'Lora' in her marriage record and in census records in which her name is recorded rather than listed as initials. News reports give her name as 'Loru,' and her eldest daughter's name as 'Loree Elizabeth.' I have used 'Lora' as that is how she appears in the genealogical records available to most searchers.)
(Note 2: Lora is known to have had other siblings.)
(Note 3: Lora's father was a son of Lt. Col. Thomas Posey, DAR Ancestor No. A091439.)
