BARRETT (COVEY), Betty Evelyn – Of Flint, age 83, died at McLaren-Flint.

Funeral service will be held at 12 noon Friday, April 22, 2016 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road.

Burial in Flint Memorial Park.

Those desiring may make contributions to Humane Society of Genesee County.

Visitation 10 a.m. Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Betty was born in Fireco, Raleigh County in the state of West Virginia on February 7, 1933.

Betty was from a large family of 8 brothers and 2 sisters, totaling 11.

Betty was married April 6, 1951 to Thomas William Covey of Crab Orchard, West Virginia. They brought their family to Michigan in 1955. In November of 1963 Tom lost his life in a tragic trucking accident.

Betty raised her two daughters, Phyllis Jean Covey and Mary Ellen (Covey) Shute by working at the GM SPO Plant called Otterburn. She hired in March 1959 and made many friends, but her most cherished friend was Norma Terry.

Betty is leaving her daughter, Phyllis Covey and good friend Rene Sturk, Mary and husband Dennis Shute.

Step-children, Mark and wife Kristin Barrett, Diane and husband Frank Hartman, Denise Little and Debbie Lintz;

She leaves behind grandchildren, Randy (Kim) Haddix, Lisa (Steve) Foster, Kevin Shute, Rachael Weaver, Hailey Barrett, Jon Hodgin, Nicholas Barrett, Kyle Little, Michael and Matt Lintz; leaving 3 great-grandchildren.

Her surviving brothers are Jim (Fatima) Meadows, Charles Meadows, Edgar Meadows (Junior), Dennis (Barbara) Meadows and Steve (Vicki) Meadows.

Over the years Betty loved bowling, singing and youth director at Penetecostal Church. She enjoyed all sports.

Betty met someone who swept her off her feet after being single for 24 years. That man was Jimmie Barrett, a maintenance supervisor at SPO. They were soon married in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 16, 1987 and he died March 24, 2014.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edgar and mother, Vada Virginia Meadows; siblings, Billy Joe Meadows, Willis and Wilford Meadows, Peggy Heiser and Rosemary Deaton.
