Stephen Tobey, 79, of Cornwall, died Friday, February 12, 2016, in the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He was the husband of Susan M. (Shamenek) Tobey, with whom he shared 46 years of marriage.

Stephen was born on August 7, 1936, in Manchester, NH, to the late Russell B. Tobey, Director, NH State Parks, and Isabelle Charlotte Dagmar Dahlberg Tobey. He was the grandson of U.S. Senator Charles W. Tobey, NH.

Stephen obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from Pepperdine University and his Masters of Science from the University of Maine at Orono. He served for 22 years in the US Navy as a Naval Aviator and was a Vietnam Veteran. His favorite tours were in Antarctica and Rota, Spain. Following his military career, Stephen taught Naval Science to NJROTC high school students in Manchester, NH, and served as a substance abuse counselor.

Stephen had a lifelong commitment to community service. In NH, he volunteered as an Emergency Medical Technician in Goffstown, served various lay functions at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dunbarton and volunteered for hospice in Peterborough. After retiring to Brevard, NC, he served as an EMT, a Community Mediator, and a mentor at an after-school program for disadvantaged and racial minority students. After moving to Cornwall Manor in PA, he served at the local fire department.

Among his various hobbies over the years, Stephen enjoyed participating in Toastmasters International, singing in a barbershop chorus, crafting stained-glass pieces, and researching and sharing the history and science of Antarctica.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Russell Tobey and Adrienne Eleanor Colby of New York, NY, and a stepsister Moselle A. Converse of Chantilly, VA.
