Congressman. He was the father of Oliver Hart Dockery, who also served in Congress. Alfred Dockery received a limited education and at a young age became a successful farmer and wagoneer. He was active in the militia, eventually serving as Brigadier General of the Fourteenth Brigade. Dockery was a member of the North Carolina House in 1822, a Delegate to the 1835 state constitutional convention, and a State Senator from 1836 to 1844. He was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Whig in 1844 and served one term, 1845 to 1847. He declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1846. In 1850 Dockery was again elected to Congress, and served from 1851 to 1853. In 1854 he ran unsuccessfully for Governor. He then returned to his family's farm and after the Civil War worked behind the scenes to found North Carolina's Republican party.
