New Hampshire Governor. He grew up in Florida and attended Mercer College and Washington and Jefferson College before receiving a law degree from the University of Georgia. He worked for a publisher in New York and started his own firm in 1951, moving it to New Hampshire in 1955. He also worked as a political science instructor, lawyer, columnist and farmer. Thomson was known as an arch-conservative and an opponent of taxes who decried virtually all government programs. He ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for Governor in 1968 and 1970, and in 1970 was the nominee of George Wallace's American party. He won the governorship as a Republican in 1972 and served from 1973 to 1979. Thomson was known for many controversial acts, including having aides search the tax records of his political opponents. It was also during his term that New Hampshire began including the state motto "Live Free or Die" on its license plates.
