This community was shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Mrs. Vestalina Hopkins, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 11, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Lewis Lloyd, north of Sycamore on the Genoa road. Her death was caused by heart failure, after an illness of only about one hour. The best of medical aid was procured, but of no avail, and she answered her summons home.
Vestalina Johnson, daughter of Isaac Johnson and Mary (Kelsey) Johnson, was born Nov. 27, 1842, at Auburn, N. Y. At the age of three years she came with her parents to Sycamore, Ill., where she grew to splendid womanhood. She was united in marriage to John Edwin Hopkins (brother of ex-United States Senator A. J. Hopkins) at Cortland, Ill., on June 14, 1870. This union was blessed with six children, of whom there are left surviving: Albert F. Hopkins, Duluth, Minn.; Mrs. Lewis Lloyd, Sycamore, Ill.; John Edwin Hopkins, Duluth, Minn.; Mrs. L. P. Hix, Marengo, Ill.; and Mrs. Elmer Simons, Aurora, Ill. Miss Ella Hopkins died in 1910.
After the death of her husband at their home south of DeKalb, in 1884, Mrs. Hopkins returned to Sycamore, and in this city has resided the greater part of the time until about four years ago, since when she has resided with her daughter Mrs. Lloyd. She is survived by one brother, Alfred Johnson, of Ellsworth, Kan.
Mrs. Hopkins became a member of the Episcopal church in her early childhood, and was always a consistent member; she believed in her religion and proved her Christianity by living it. Sudden as was her call, she was ready. The world is better because she lived in it.
The funeral services will be held at the late home this Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2 o’clock p.m. Rev. F. L. Hanscom will officiate and the interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.
