Pfc. Miles W. Doane
The body of Pfc. Miles F. Doane, son of Mrs. Nettle and the late Jay Doane of Falls Creek. Is scheduled to arrive in DuBois Tuesday, July 13th, at 9 45 p.m. He is being returned from a U.S. Military cemetery in Brittany, France, where he had been interred since August 31, 1944.The casket will be held over at the Short Funeral Home in Dubois Wednesday morning the body will be taken to his mother's home at Rockdale, where friends will be received until Friday at 2 p.m. when the funeral service will be held at the Hazen Methodist church. Interment will be at the Temple cemetery Pfc. Doane was in the 175th Inf. 29th Div. He took his training at Fort Meade, MD, Camp Dilworth, N.C., Camp Blanding, Fla., and Fort Dix. N. J. and left for overseas September 1942. He was in one of the first waves to hit the Normany Beaches on D-Day and was seriously wounded June 17, 1944. After hospitalization he returned to his old outfit and was instantly killed by shrapnel on August 31st. He received the following medals; Good Conduct, E.T.O. and the Purple Heart with cluster. He was employed as a farm hand by Don Buchanan when drafted into the Army. Miles had worked on the farm since he was a boy "Mike," as his friends called him, was quiet, steady and unassuming, just another good boy who, for home and country, paid the terrible price of war. The deceased leaves one sister and six brothers, of whom were also in the service. They are as follows Frank, of North Tonawanda; Hiram, of Hazen; Annabelle Senior, William, Leonard, Lewis and Paul, of Rockdale, Pa.
