Statesman. Prime Minister of Denmark from 1962 to 1968 and from 1971 to 1972. A graduate in political science, he was a member of the Danish Parliament for the Social Democratic Party from 1947 to 1973. In 1972 he resigned as Prime Minister after having secured Denmark's entry into the European Community, which is now the European Union. From 1974 to 1975 he was Chief Delegate of the European Commission in Washington D.C. In 1973 he was awarded the Schuman Prize and that same year he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bradford in England.
