Mrs. Gardner, a First Lady of Missouri, was a natural beauty. Her grace & charm served her well as the hostess of Blair House, the governor's mansion. She was the wife of Frederick Dozier Gardner whom she married in St. Louis 10 October 1895; the daughter of James Vosburgh & Jenne Rooke Vosburgh, both natives of the state of New York.

WWI was raging in Europe when her husband was inaugurated & that year, 1917, the Senate & House voted to declare war on Austria-Hungary. As Missouri was a leader in aviation technologies, King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth were guests of the Gardner family in St. Louis. where they also hosted Gen. George Pershing.

The Gardners & their three children, William King, Dozier Lee & Janet returned to St. Louis in 1921. Fred had built a strong, prosperous business, St. Louis Casket Company & had purchased the Memphis Casket Company. With his brother Russell, he was involved in the manufacture of hearses & ambulances, now motorised; & in the breeding & sale of fine stock & farms. Jeanette knew real prosperity.
