Martin Hildebrandt was one of the first professional tattoo artists in New York City. He made a name tattooing some of the earliest tattooed attractions, specifically created for the dime museum stage, and was very likely the mentor of the illustrious Bowery tattoo artist, Sam O'Reilly.

Note: The nickname "Old Martin" is documented in a February 1, 1898 New York Evening Post newspaper article about New York tattoo artists.

Note: Photos of tattooed man Harry Decourcy (Real name William H. Denny)are often mistakenly identified as Martin Hildebrandt. There are no known photographs of Hildebrandt.
