Elmer Linton Dillingham, Jr. / December 29, 1944 - August 9, 2011

Elmer Linton Dillingham, Jr. died unexpectedly on August 9, 2011, while receiving treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He was 66.

His wife, Mary Cameron Phillips Dillingham of St. Augustine, Florida; daughter Cameron Dillingham Paschall and her husband Stephen Paschall; infant grandson Walker Linton Paschall; and a stepson, William March Jamison, all of Greensboro, North Carolina, survive him. Mr. Dillingham was the son of Valera Roberts Dillingham and Elmer L. Dillingham, Sr.

He grew up in Lindale, Georgia, where he attended public school. He graduated from Berry College, received a masters degree from California State University at Northridge, and completed additional degree and graduate courses at Lenoir-Rhyne College, the University of North Carolina, and Western Carolina University.

Elmer was an educator, having served as a teacher and a coach, before becoming an educational administrator, serving as the superintendent of the North Carolina Schools for the Deaf in both Morganton and Wilson. He became the president of the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in 1997 and remained in that position until his retirement in 2008.

He was committed to his schools and the children which they served. His focus was always on the students, with the goal of assuring that they received the most appropriate education and care. He attributed his successes to the dedicated faculty and staff with whom he was privileged to collaborate.

Upon his retirement Elmer was recognized by Berry College for outstanding contributions to the field of education and was named President Emeritus by the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, both honors for which he was most grateful and proud.

Elmer loved his family and was devoted to his friends. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed Gator Football and Carolina Basketball.

Private services will be held at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind's Elmer Dillingham Scholarship Fund at the following address: Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, Attention: Terri Wiseman, 207 North San Marco Avenue, St. Augustine Florida, 32084.
