In 1860, he resided in the Town Of Wyalusing, Grant Co., WI. He lived in Lancaster until ca 1872, when he was a Surveyor General of the Dakotas.

Dewey County in north-central South Dakota is named in honor of William Pitt Dewey, who was Territorial Surveyor-General from 1873 to 1877.
