Dr. Joseph G. Young, 80, of Elgin passed away Saturday, May 2, 2015 at St. Alexius Medical Center, Hoffman Estates. He was born July 30, 1934 in Oak Park the son of Claude and Martha (Tonder) Young. Growing up in LaGrange, he attended school at St. Francis Xavier and St. Procopius (now Benet Academy) and in 1956 graduated from St. Procopius College in the top 98% of his class (now Benedictine University) and the Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University in 1960. No stranger to doing (or watching) work, he partly covered his school expenses through employment in a bakery, because, as he said, he needed the dough. Following medical school, Dr. Young was stationed at Fort Ord, Monterrey, CA where he earned the rank of Captain in the United States Army while practicing pathology and perfecting his backswing.

In 1964, Dr. Young returned to Illinois to begin over four decades of private medical practice. In the days before today’s highly specialized medicine, he was a family doctor in Elgin performing everything from house calls to gall bladder surgeries to delivering thousands of newborns. He was affiliated with both Sherman and St. Joseph hospitals, for a time serving as Chief of Staff, as well as being a member of the Elgin Board of Health.

In his professional and personal life, Dr. Young was well known for his hats and his outstanding sense of humor, often administering a series of proven one-liners to brighten the day. Partly inspired by the inventions of his late father, he and his wife Jackie became recognized worldwide as authorities in the field of kitchen tools. Together with their daughter Amy, the three traveled the Midwest scouring yard sales and flea markets to find the next missing piece for their collection. But his biggest joy in life was discovered as a grandparent, especially the precious time spent with his grandsons.

Surviving are his wife: Jacqueline Blazier Young, a daughter: Amy (Jeff) Boyle of Chicago, four grandsons: Andrew, Colin, Edward and Geoffrey, a stepdaughter: Stephanie Gudeman of San Diego, CA, three step grandchildren: Jesse, Zak and Luke, a brother: Paul Young, two sisters: Mary Margaret (Jim) Benka, Mary Angela (Steve) Kowal, two sisters-in-law: Dee Young and Kay Young, many nieces and nephews and his faithful canine companion, the lovable yellow lab Daisy.

He was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Martha, mother Dorothy (Kolb) Young and nine brothers and sisters: George (Lillian) Young, Pete Young, Mary Gene (John) Simon, Mary Lucille Keoughan, Michael Louis Young, Marty Young, Mary Annette Young, Mary Dorothy Young and Edward Young, and a sister-in-law: Irene (Mayer) Young.

Visitation for family, friends and associates will be 4:00 – 8:00 PM, Thursday, May 7 at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State Street, Elgin, IL. Funeral Services will be held Friday, May 8 at 11:00 AM at Laird Funeral Home, followed by a private graveside service.

In honor of the years Dr. Young spent serving the St. Joseph hospital community and his recent time on the 4th floor rehabilitation wing, the family requests that any memorial gifts be made in his name and sent to the PSJH Foundation Office, 77 N. Airlite Street, Elgin, IL 60123.
