George Washington “G.W.” Meriwether

G.W. was the son of Gen. David Merriwether who fought as a junior officer with Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War. G.W. married Martha Marshall Williams* June 21,1825. They moved to Dyer County TN where
G.W. kept a ferry across Reelfoot Lake. [Reelfoot Lake was formed by the Mississippi River at the time of the massive New Madrid Earthquake in 1811.] After G.W. died of disease in 1847 (or 1848) his widow soon moved the family to the new state of Texas. She never re-married but the family prospered.
Note: the correct spelling of the surname is MERIWETHER.
Note: G.W. may be buried in the Atkins Cemetery, Newbern, Dyer County, TN...he was a Methodist.
