Politician. Born into a family of humble means. At the age of 23 he became a trade union leader, and soon afterwards he was elected into the Folketing (The Danish Parliament) and the Copenhagen City Council. In 1924 to 1926 he became Denmark's first Social-Democratic prime minister and again from 1929 to 1942. During this period he introduced many modern social laws as well as other legislations, often in collaboration with non-socialist parties, and at the end of the 1930's he was widely considered a national father figure. In the foreign policy he observed a strict neutrality, mostly so as not to provoke Germany, and it was a hard personal blow to him when Germany invaded Denmark in April 1940, a blow from which he never fully recovered. His funeral, which was held in Copenhagen's largest exhibition hall, was attended by 8,000 people headed by King Christian X.
