In 1808, married Sarah Goodson King, daughter of Col. James King, the "Iron King" and they lived on the 1200 acre plantation at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee that she received from her father and brother. William was a farmer, merchant, and postmaster at Strawberry Plains. He died of consumption at his parents home at Panther Creek while traveling with his wife to Cuba in an attempt to improve his health. He is buried in a currently unmarked grave.
