In early manhood he taught school and conducted evening writing classes. He studied medicine in the Harvard Medical School, and began his practice in his native town. October 17, 1862, he enlisted for nine months as hospital steward in the 53d Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers. April 12, 1864, he enlisted in the 34th Regiment, and was appointed assistant surgeon, remaining until the close of the war. Several mouths, however, were spent in Libby Prison, and this so undermined his health that he was obliged to give up practice after his return to Barre.

On the 1865 Census from Barre, Worcester, MA: Charles G. and his wife Lucy R. Allen were living within the household of her parents Charles and Lucy Bacon. Charles G. Allen was listed as a physician.

Upon returning to Barre, Worcester, Massachusetts, he bought a farm, but soon took the agency for several agricultural implements. He was the inventor and manufacturer of the Yankee horse rake and the Allen stone puller. He also manufactured the Victor plow. He has served on the board of selectmen, and school committee, and was for two years president of the Agricultural Society. He was a strong advocate of the temperance cause, and has been nominated by the Prohibition Party for various high offices. At the Barre centennial, June 17, 1874, he was chief marshal.

On the 1880 Federal Census from Barre, Worcester, Massachusetts: Charles G. Allen age 46 MA; wife, Lucy R. age 32 MA; son Harding age 13 MA; daughter, Lucy age 8 MA; daughter, Mabel age 7 MA; daughter, Flora age 6 MA; son, Charles G. age 4 MA; daughter Mary W. age 3 MA; son, George S. age 6 months; Mother, Lucy B.
