He attended Little Rock Central High School and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He was married for 45 years to the former Barbara Ann Nichols, who died in October 1996. Ray was a long time teacher in the biology department at the University of Central Arkansas. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin, “The Funny Farm”, near Calico Rock with the students, friends and family. Ray used his teaching position to promote the protection of the environment and respect for all living things. Ray retired from his teaching position in 1989, but continued to teach throughout his life. Ray was a true outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, and hiking. He enjoyed folk music, blue grass, and old time country music. Later in life he took up karaoke, and entertained friends and family singing the classic songs he had grown to love.
