Mrs. Kathryn Ann Swanson Esser, 84, of Waukegan Illinois, died September 29, 2011, in Birmingham Alabama. Kathryn was born in Waukegan and grew up living at 414 Center Street. She graduated from Waukegan High School (class of 1945) and she graduated from Lake Forest College in 1949. During World War II she worked on the assembly line at Abbot Laboratories. Over her lifetime, she lived for 42 years in the Chicago area, 20 years in Acton MA and the last 18 years in Williamsburg VA before coming to Birmingham in 2008. Waukegan and the Chicago area was always Kay's "home". She was a strong supporter of the Chicago Cubs in good seasons and bad and she proudly displayed her love of the Cubs on her license plates. Kay was also a lover of animals and this included her horse, Velvet, and the family dogs. Funeral services for Kathryn Esser will be conducted at St. Alban's Episcopal Church at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 1st. Burial will be in the Monticello Graveyard in Charlottesville VA at a later date. She is survived by her husband, Jeff (Esser) of Birmingham and her 3 children, Randy Esser of Birmingham, Karyn Esser of Lexington KY, and Doug Esser of Doylestown PA, and 5 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, a donation to an animal shelter or organization that helps horses would be much appreciated.
