Tennessee Governor. He attended Jefferson Academy, studied law at Blountville Academy, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Blountville, Tennessee. He was elected Justice of the Peace for Sullivan County Tennessee, in 1886, served as Sullivan County District Attorney, in 1889, was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1892-94) and a member of the Tennessee State Senate, (1900-05). When Governor James Frazier resigned to fill a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate, Cox as a Democrat became the 29th Governor of Tennessee, serving (1905-07). Failing his bid for reelection, he was reelected to the Tennessee State Senate, serving (1907-12) and in the Tennessee State House of Representatives, in 1913. He was Postmaster of Bristol, Tennessee, (1914-22), then retired to his farm until his death at age 90.
