Eighth child of William Henry Stratton and Julia Ann Dodd, her actual place of birth was Oasis, near Arabia and Simeon, Nebraska. Her father owned a mercantile store in the area, and her grandmother (Ma Amy) ran the Post Office at Simeon. In 1900 Julia and the children moved to Oakmound, Missouri, then to Kansas in 1907, then to south-central Nebraska about 1910.

Before her marriage to James Hanna, Amy served as a private-duty nurse to his mother Nancy Ann (Steinman) Hanna as her health failed due to cancer. James had homesteaded 600 acres near Torrington, Wy. James came to Harlan County, Nebraska in the summer of 1916 to help with the harvesting on his mother's property. James (age 46) and Amy (age 23) were married in Holdredge, Nebraska in September of 1916. They lived on the Torrington, Wyoming farm, which had the address of Fulton, Wyoming in 1920 and Veteran, Wyoming in 1922. In 1923 the family moved back to the Hanna homestead in Harlan County, Nebraska.
