“Frances Ann Gould” (1693 Barbados—1731 VA).
She was born in 1693 @ St. James Parish, Barbados.
She was baptized on 5-28-1693 @ St. James Parish, Barbados.

Frances was the daughter of “Enoch Gould” (1668-1720) & “Mary Gould” (his 1st. wife of 2; both named Mary).
---------------------------------
FRANCES’ FATHER = “Enoch Gould”:

Frances’ father had an adventurous & dangerous life before he arrived in Barbados! In 1685 “Enoch Gould” joined the forces of the “Protestant” James Scott, the Duke of Monmouth. The Duke intended to lay claim to the English throne which had recently been assumed by the “Catholic” King James II. Monmouth's forces attacked during the night @ Sedgemoor, but Lord John Churchill rallied the royal troops who then overpowered Monmouth's forces. Many of Monmouth’s forces were killed during the battle. About 300 were later hanged. About 800 were charged with “high treason” (including Enoch Gould) & banished to the island of Barbados.

Enoch was “bound” into servitude for 10 years to a Lt. Gen. Abel Allen who was a wealthy sugar planter of St. James Parish. However, Enoch & fellow rebels were “conditionally liberated” on 3-17-1692. They received: no compensation for their time-served, were forbidden to leave the island without the King’s permission, & were forced to join the local militia.

Enoch Gould fared better than most rebels. He owned property in St. Joseph Parish by 1702.

In 1709 Enoch’s Daughter was 16; “Frances Ann Gould” was given-in-marriage to “William Mayo”.

In 1710 Enoch Gould, William Mayo, & others received permission to construct a new pew in St. Michael's Church in Barbados.

In 1715 Enoch was living in St. Michael Parish @ Bridgetown with his 2nd. wife [also named Mary as was his 1st. wife was…but this one was Mary Thompson (age 51)].

In 1717 Enoch Gould was identified as a Bridgetown merchant.

FRANCES’ MARRIAGE:

“Major William Mayo” (1684 Eng.—1744 VA). He was born in 1684 @ Wilts Co., England. He was christened @ Poulshot on 11-4-1684.

He was the son of “Joseph Mayo” & “Elizabeth Hooper”. When he was 25 in 1709, he left England with his younger brother Joseph to go to Barbados in the Caribbean; their cousin had settled there a few years earlier.

William met & married his first wife, “Frances Ann Gould”. They married on 12-11-1709 @ St. Michael Parish, Barbados when William was 25 & Frances was 16.
-------------------------------
William Mayo” became a prominent surveyor & cartographer. He surveyed the Caribbean islands in 1717--1721. The map that he drew is on file in the King’s College Library. Apparently, William Byrd attested to its accuracy. In 1722 the Board of Trade ordered its secretary to purchase one of William Mayo’s maps of Barbados. William received money for the sale of his maps.
