Andrew Safstrom was born in Sweden to Jon Johansson and Kerstin Mansdotter. He was one of eight children, and four of them emigrated to the United States, the other three being two sisters, Sigrid and Karin, and a brother Johannes.

Andrew married Anna Maria Persdotter in Sweden in June of 1871. All six of their children were born in Rulbo, Gavleborg County, Sweden. Andrew and Anna Maria's eldest son John came to the United States several years before the rest of the family on a scholarship to become a Lutheran minister, and son Fridolf arrived in Boston in 1902. The remainder of the family arrived in New York City on April 10th, 1903, declaring $300 in cash.

He was a harness maker, shoemaker, and leather worker by trade, and set up a shop in Gwinner. The family also did some farming, but likely on a small scale.

Andrew died a few days shy of his 83rd birthday of pneumonia.
