John emigrated from Sweden to the U.S. in 1866 at age six, his family settling in Wright County, MN. By 1882 he was living in Ransom County, ND, and in 1885 he was operating a hardware store in Gwinner. He was the first postmaster of Forsby, ND, a charter member of the Lutheran Church in Gwinner, and added his brother-in-law to his hardware store business, forming Safstrom and Ek Hardware in Gwinner with Fridolf Safstrom. After his first wife, Carry Larson, died, he married Amanda Safstrom.
