Gilbert was united in marriage to Myrtle Stish on June 26, 1938 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. For years Gilbert suffered from ill health. By the grace of God and help from several competent and caring doctors and nurses, he was able to return to farming after having had open heart surgery. He was so thankful for all their help years ago and now before his death.

Gilbert died February 1, 1997 at home with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brothers: Hannah, Gertrude, Arthur, Oscar, Fred, Alice, Mabel, Clara, Myrtle, Carl, Barney, Ruth, James and Henry. Survivors include his wife Myrtle, son David, daughter Kathleen.
Funeral services were held February 6, 1977 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Merlin Bartelt officiating. Honorary pallbearers included his nieces, nephews and their spouses. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.
