Samuel Francis Adams, 87, and his wife of only four months, Edda Mae Adams, were killed yesterday when a runaway jeep in which they and two young girls were riding crashed through a shed on a ranch eight miles south of Petrolia.

The girls, age 9 and 11, who were riding in back, escaped with minor injuries. The girls are the daughters of a neighboring rancher.

The brakes on the vehicle apparently failed as it was headed down a steep incline toward the ranch buildings. Adams was knocked from the vehicle as it crashed through the shed. His wife remained inside the jeep as its momentum then carried it into the side of the nearby ranch house. Bodies of the two victims were taken to Citizen's Mortuary in Ferndale.

The girls reported the accident to the Humboldt County sheriff's office which is turn notified the California highway patrol
