Robert, the son of Theophilus Sherman Morgan and Harriet Reed of Oswego, attended Union College where he trained as an engineer. After graduation he worked on the construction of Fort Ontario near Oswego.
He entered the 10th U.S. Infantry (a one-year regiment) as a lieutenant on 9 April 1847. Serving in Mexico, he acted as regimental quartermaster before being promoted Captain on 8 May 1848. He was discharged on 26 August 1848, and thereafter worked for the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C. While there he married Elizabeth Wood on 9 October 1856.
On 18 June 1862, Robert enlisted and mustered as a Captain and Assistant Quartermaster in the Army Quartermaster's Department, and was stationed in New York City. He was breveted Major and Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers "for faithful and meritorious service" on 13 March 1865. He was mustered out on 1 October 1867, and resumed working as a government clerk. In 1880, Robert was living in Washington D.C. with Elizabeth and her sister Hannah Wood. He became Companion #00335 of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), the first post-Civil War veteran's organization, on 6 June 1866. His membership medal is shown here.
