US Congressman. He was born in Grapevine, Texas and attended several colleges including the University of Texas. In the mid-1930s he worked on the staff of Congressman Fritz Lanham, completed a law degree at American University, was admitted to the Texas State Bar Association, and commenced a law practice in 1938. He joined the United States Army for World War II, serving in Europe as an Army enlisted man from 1943 to 1945, afterwards returning to Texas to serve as an Assistant United States Attorney. In 1946 he was elected as a Democrat to represent Texas’s 12th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives and he would go on to served four terms from 1947 to 1955. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination in 1954 (losing to future House Speaker Jim Wright) and returned to his law practice. In 1958 he became a government relations executive for General Electric in New York City, New York, a position he held until 1966, when he moved to Tennessee to become Executive Director of the Mid-Appalachian College Council. He held this position until 1986, afterwards living in retirement until his death in Bristol, Tennessee.
