Obituary from the "University of Alabama Alumni News," June 1950:

Dr. Alston Fitts, retired Tuscaloosa physician died on May 29 at his home on University avenue. He had been in failing health for several months.

Dr. Fitts was one of ten children born of James Harris Fitts in Clarke County, educated at Fonville School in Tuscaloosa. He attended the University, and received his AB and LLB degrees in 1886 and 1887, graduating first in his class in both schools. He was a member of the Kappa Psi Medical fraternity and the Kappa Alpha social fraternity. After his University graduation, Dr. Fitts continued his studies at the University of Leipzig, Germany, and the next year received a certificate of proficiency in the German Language.

After his return from Germany, and a subsequent tour of Europe, he became Exchange Clerk in the Bank of J.H. Fitts & Co. In 1891, he began his medical studies in Tuscaloosa, under the tutelage of Dr. James L. Williams, and in 1892 he entered the medical department of Columbia College in New York where he graduated in 1895. Dr. Fitts served as house surgeon of the Woman’s Hospital in New York in 1898 and 1899, before he returned to open his practice in Tuscaloosa.

At the beginning of World War I, he entered the medical corps of the Army, and served overseas, returning in 1920. He was then appointed to Professor of Hygiene and Physician at the University [of Alabama]. Ge served several terms as a member of the City Board of Education. After retiring from active service, Dr. Fitts spent much of his time gardening and reading French novels.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Austen L. Bennet, two sons, Alston II and J.H., Jr., of Tuscaloosa, and eight grandchildren.
