Mississippi Governor, U.S. Senator. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Minuteman in the Continental Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, practiced law and was appointed by President Thomas Jefferson, a United States judge for Mississippi Territory in 1807. Moving to Mississippi, he practiced law and upon the admission of Mississippi as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving (1817-20). After leaving the Senate, he was appointed U.S. Marshal for the district of Mississippi in 1820. In 1821, he was elected the 3rd Governor of Mississippi, serving until his death. He was the first Governor of Mississippi, to die in office.
