He became deputy mayor of the 9th district of Paris in September 1870, after the fall of the Second Empire. As such, he ordered on 22 January 1871 the troupe to fire on the crowd at City Hall. He was opposed to the decision of the Government of National Defense to provide the Prussians capitulation of Paris.

This earned him his arrest on 14 April 1871 and he was execute on 23 May 1871.
