Thomas A. Jones one of the pioneer residents of this vicinity and a member of the G. A. R. post passed away on Saturday of last week at the Soldier's Home at Marshalltown, where he had been taken serval weeks ago. He had been ill for the past year and had been slowly failing, since the death of his lifelong companion last March. He was also a member of the Pomegranate Lodge AM & FM of this place. Thomas A. Jones was born in Wales on Feb. 24, 1843. When but three years of age he came with his parents to America, located in Utica, New York, where he spent the early part of his life. When the war of Rebellion broke out, like all true Americans, interested in the welfare of his county, he enlisted in the northern army for three years and did valiant service for his county. He was married to Miss Hannah Pewsey in the year of 1864 and a little later moved to Clinton County, Iowa. Catching the spirit of the western trend he came to Buena Vista County, settling on a farm north of Storm Lake. To Mr. and Mrs. Jones was born nine children, two of whom with an aged mother, preceded the husband and father to the better land. The surviving children are Mrs. Mary Hirt of Hector, Minnesota, Mrs. Jennie Williams of Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs. Minnie Pendergaust of Northwood, North Dakota, Mrs. Maude Mallard of Cherokee Thomas Jones of Omaha, Nebraska, and John and Ed Jones of this city. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. G. O. Kidder at the Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon of this week. The services were attended by the members of the local Masonic lodge and the G.A.R. post. The remains were laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery. The Alta Advertiser Sept. 22, 1911. KW
