Captain John H.L. Giles, a native of Marblehead and a descendant of an old Marblehead family, died this morning at 5 o'clock, having been taken with a sudden illness at 8 o'clock last evening. The deceased was seventy-four years of age and had followed the sea as a Grand Bank fisherman for many years.
He was a naval veteran of the Civil War and saw twenty-seven months service on the battleships Bohio, commanded by Captain William Gregory and the Colorado, from which he was discharged. Captain Giles was a member of the local police force at the time when the members served without pay. For the past twenty-seven years he has been Captain of the Massachusetts Life Saving Association. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. J. Hooper Martin, Mrs. S.S. Trefry, Mrs. C.W. Shepard and a son, Captain John F. Giles. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:30 o'clock at the residence 20 Pearl street. Rev. Mr. C.H. Welles, pastor of St. Michael's Episcopal Church will officiate. Delegations from John Goodwin Jr. Post 82 G.A.R. and Atlantic Lodge I.O.O.F. of which the deceased was a member will attend. Interment will be in Waterside Cemetery.
