John Milton Young, son of the late Senator Milton R. Young and Malinda (Benson) Young was born on November 26, 1923 in Berlin, North Dakota, where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Berlin High School in 1941 and then attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks for two years. He came back to Berlin to farm on the family farm, in which the land became his lifelong passion.

Scoop was married to Marcia Hartwig on August 17, 1952 in Edgeley, North Dakota. Scoop and Marcia adopted two children from AnLac Orphanage, Vietnam. Than John joined their family in December 1969 and Anh Lee arrived in April 1970. The couple made their home on a farm ½ mile west of Berlin, where they lived until retiring in 1997, when they moved to LaMoure, North Dakota.

Scoop continued his daily trips to the farm and visits to his many friends in Edgeley and LaMoure. Scoop was on the Berlin Elevator Board for 35 years, the Berlin Cemetery Board, and a member of the Community of Christ Church. In his earlier years, he enjoyed traveling and made many trips to Washington D.C. and Arizona to visit his dad and step-mother, Pat Byrnes Young. Scoop enjoyed his family and grandchildren. He took great interest in what they were doing and their accomplishments.

Scoop died on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at his home in LaMoure. He was 86 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia; one son, Than (Charlotte Mathern) Young; one grandson; and four granddaughters. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Rachel Young, Gwen Young and June Hartwig; his step-mother, Pat Young; and many nieces and nephews.

Scoop was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Anh Lee, one grandson, Marcus James Young; and two brothers, Wendell and Duane Young.
