From Sheron Smith-Savage:
—Published in Asheville News (Asheville, North Carolina), September 27, 1855, p. 3.
DIED,
Suddenly of apoplexy, in this town, on the night of the 19th inst., JAMES NOEL VANCE, third son of Capt. David and Mrs. Mira M. Vance. The deceased had long been subject to epileptic attacks, occasioned by a fracture of the skull, which marked him for the last ten years of his life as a great sufferer. At his death he was 23 years of age.
His virtues were many and lovely. Possessed of a noble intellect, which disease had shattered and impaired, he was remarkable for the kindness of his disposition, liveliness, and unchanging nature. All his traits of character were those which indicated extreme goodness of heart, and rendered him justly beloved by all who knew him and commiserated his sufferings. He had been for four years a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and gave exemplary indications of that loveliest of all things—youthful piety. It is consoling to his friends to know that his sufferings have ended. Peace to his ashes. A glorious immortality to his soul!
