ANDREW G. ANDERSON, manager and treasurer of the Lutheran Augustana Book Concern, whose success in business and sterling worth numbers him among the valued citizens of Rock Island, comes from that land that has furnished to America so many of her best citizens, the kingdom of Sweden. There he was born on the 4th of December, 1857, and comes of farming ancestry. Both his maternal and paternal grandfathers were agriculturists, and continued to till the soil throughout the period of their active lives. Both have long since passed away. The parents of our subject, Olof and Anna Christine (Olsson) Anderson, were also natives of Sweden, and the father followed farming there until 1870, when he crossed the Atlantic to America and took up his residence in Red Wing, Minnesota. For some time he worked in a sawmill, but is now living retired there.

Both he and his wife are consistent members of the Lutheran church. Their family numbered seven children, five of whom are now living: Andrew G. jjohn; Christine, wife of C. G. Thulin, of Moline, Illinois; Clara, who is bookkeeper for the firm of McCabe Brothers of Rock Island; and Olof P. Andrew G. Anderson, whose name forms the caption of this article, acquired his early education in the land of his birth, and continued his studies in Red Wing, Minnesota, after his emigration to America.

Throughout his entire business career he has been engaged in printing and publishing, his initial experience being gained in the office of the "Luthersk Kyrkotidning," a paper published at the Argus office in Red Wing. He began his labors there in 1873 and the following year on the removal of the " Augustana" from Chicago to Rock Island he came to this place, continuing as an employe in the office of that journal for some time.

When his first employer, A. C. F. De Remee, sold out he continued with his successors, and became a member of the firm of Wistrand, Thulin and Anderson in the conduct of a job office in Moline for two years. On the expiration of that period the firm sold out to the publishing board of the Augustana Synod; their present building at the corner of Thirty-eighth street and Seventh avenue was erected and the establishment was moved to the present location.

Mr. Anderson continued as foreman of the printing department until 1889, when he was elected by the board to take entire charge of the whole institution as manager and treasurer, which offices he has held ever since. They publish works of authority for the Swedish Lutheran church in the United States, also the Augustana, which is the weekly official organ of the Evangelical Lutheran Augustana Synod, and is published in the Swedish language; the Augustana Journal, printed in English, a semi-monthly; the Olive Leaf, in English, and Barnens Tidning, Sunday-school papers in Swedish, beside many books and tracts, of which they have gotten out a large catalogue.

They also import books and do their binding in addition to the composition work on their books. Their printing and binding is done in the highest style of the art, according to the most modern and improved methods, and on their pay roll are forty-eight names. This is regarded as one of the most important industrial concerns in Rock Island, and the success which attends the enterprise is largely due to the careful management and superior business and executive ability of Mr. Anderson.

On the 26th of October, 1880, Mr. Anderson was united in marriage to Miss Hilda L. Lindstrom, a daughter of Johan P. and Anna Lindstrom. They have five children, two sons and three daughters: Anna V. E.; Paul A., deceased; Alvin G. J.; Agnes, deceased; and Laura. Their pleasant home, located at No. 3908 Eighth avenue, Rock Island, is noted for the gracious hospitality which pervades it, and it is a favorite resort especially with the Swedish Lutheran people of the city. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson are valued members of the Zion Lutheran church, of Rock Island, take a very active part in its work, and Mr. Anderson, who has been deacon for two terms, is now serving as superintendent of the Sunday school.

His political support is given the Republican party. His character has always been one of great sincerity and firmness. His integrity is unquestioned. Careful, painstaking, exact and conscientious he has prospered deservingly from year to year. By reason of his success, his unblemished character, his just and liberal life and the universal esteem which he here enjoys Mr. Anderson may well be called one of the foremost citizens of Rock Island.
