A telegram was received Monday morning by W.C. Putnam, announcing the death at Jacksonville, Ill., yesterday, of Mrs. Julia Duncan Kirby, wife of Judge Edward P. Kirby, and only sister of Mrs. M.L.D. Putnam of this city. The news was not entirely unexpected, as Mrs. Kirby has been ill for the past three weeks, though when Mr. Putnam visited at their home on his way back from Evansville the day before she was taken sick, she was the picture of health. Saturday her condition became so alarming that Mrs. Putnam and daughter, Miss Bessie, left for Jacksonville. Mr. Putnam left for the same place this noon, to attend the funeral, which is to take place tomorrow afternoon.
Mrs. Kirby was the daughter of the late Gov. Joseph Duncan, one of the early executives of Illinois. She was well-known in this city, having been a frequent visitor at the home of Mrs. Putnam, and those who met her admired her for her lovable character and qualities of mind and heart. In Jacksonville, her home, she was widely known as one of the most systematic and practical charitable workers of the city, much of her time being devoted to work of that kind, her energies being expended in that direction in the absence of any children to occupy her mind and attention. Mrs. Kirby will be deeply mourned by a wide circle, which will not include only those of her own station in society.
