Scientist. He is considered to be one of the giants of American ornithology, and was America's first taxonomist, describing 198 birds not previously mentioned by ornithological artists Alexander Wilson and John James Audubon. Cassin drew, printed and hand-colored many of the illustrations for the Pacific Railroad Surveys as the western regions of the United States were explored. In 1842 he was named curator of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are five North American birds that honor John Cassin in their common names - Cassin's Auklet, Cassin's Finch, Cassin's Kingbird, Cassin's Sparrow, Cassin's Vireo. The journal of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), "Cassinia", is named in his honor.
