Phyllis Marie (Cale) Smith, of Waynesboro, went home to be with Her Lord, after a courageous battle with a brain tumor on Friday, August 23, 2013. She was born in Waynesboro, daughter of the late Henry Harrison and Nannie Bell (Henderson) Cale.

Phyllis had previously worked at the General Wayne Hotel and General Electric. Most important to her was being a mother and being with her family. She was a charter member of West Waynesboro Church of Christ and was the Bible School Secretary for over 40 years. Phyllis also served as treasurer and was always ready and willing to help at the church. She loved doing yard work and taking care of her flowers. Phyllis always enjoyed being with family and friends and enjoyed taking family vacations, especially to the beach. Her biggest joy in life was her church and family and her biggest treasure was her faith. She never met a stranger.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George William Smith; daughter, Shirley S. Arehart; her sisters, Nora Campbell, Dorothy Riley, and Helen Moore; a brother, Wilbert Cale and an infant brother, Robert Cale.

Surviving family includes her daughter Leslie Smith House and husband James; brother, Bobby Cale and wife Charlotte; grandchildren, Walter Scott Arehart and Kimberly Arehart; son in law, Walter E. Arehart all of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at McDow Funeral Home, 1701 West Main Street, Waynesboro with Ministers Chad Grondin and Phil Forehand. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Cook, Gary Cook, Lewis Gurkin, Lyle Fitzgerald, Bennie McAllister, and Al Taillon. Honorary pallbearers will be members of West Waynesboro Church of Christ.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 26, 2013 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made, in Phyllis's memory, to West Waynesboro Church of Christ, 2212 Cortland Street, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
