ROBERT DAVID PREUS, 71, of Shorewood, Minn., died Saturday at home. He was 14th president of Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne and had served the seminary during its move from Springfield, Ill., to Fort Wayne in 1957, became its president 1974-1989, and again during the 1993 school year. Melvin Bredemeier of Fort Wayne, a member of the Board of Regents, said Preus will best be remembered as "a church theologian and teacher of a great many pastors presently serving congregations of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod." During his tenure as president, Preus raised the academic standards and was instrumental in establishing graduate degree programs including doctor of ministry, master of sacred theology and doctor of missiology . He and his wife, Donna, had 10 children. Four of their sons and two of their sons-in-law are pastors.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Maple Grove, Minn. Burial will be in the church's cemetery.
