GEORGE SARGENT AT LIFE'S END IN SAN FRANCISCO
The death in San Francisco yesterday of George Clark Sargent, whose family name is closely interwoven with the history of Nevada City, was disclosed in a telegram to Dr. C. W. Chapman.
He was the son of the late Senator A. A. Sargent, one of the pioneer political leaders of Nevada county. He received his education in Washington, where he lived during his father's term as a United States senator and also in Germany, where his father was minister plenipotentiary under President Grant.
George Sargent studied law and was admitted to the bar of California, and had long been a leading attorney in San Francisco. He was among the last of the lawyers of the old school, well versed in the law, courtly and courtesy in his court practice, and he had the esteem of the judiciary and his fellow practitioners.
His love for his native town of Nevada City was one of the predominating characteristics of the man, and he never was so happy as when here on visits that were as frequent as the demands of his large practice would permit. He kept in close touch with his old home city and a few close personal friends with whom he always spent much of his time on his visits.
Mr. Sargent was born July 26, 1860 just seventy years ago today. He had been ill for about three months and his death was not unexpected, and the end came peacefully yesterday afternoon at 1:15 o'clock.
He was prominent in club life in San Francisco, holding membership in the Bohemian Club, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Sons of the American Revolution, California Pioneers, California Historical Society, the Commonwealth Club and he was also a trustee of the Lux School.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Helen More Sargent, two sons, Aaron and Edward, and a daughter, Miss Helen Sargent.
The funeral will be held on Monday at an hour to be announced later.
The Morning Union - Sat. July 26, 1930
(Note: This article of Sat. July 26, 1930 twice states that George Sargent had died yesterday, which would indicate July 25. The California Death Index also lists July 25th as his date of death. The information from U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970 below indicates a death date of July 23, 1930, thus creating a discrepancy in his date of death, but one that I severely doubt both the newspapers and the California Death Index would have both reported in error. Thereby the date with more references is preferred as correct.)
George Sargent
IN THE FIFTIES and sixties no name in California was more widely known than that of Aaron A. Sargent. As United States senator and plenipotentiary, he long occupied a large place in national affairs. His home was in Nevada City and it was there that his son, George C. Sargent, who died last week, was born in 1860.
The younger Sargent left the mountains and in San Francisco enjoyed a long and honorable career at the bar. If less inclined to public life than was his father, his worth to the state was none the less marked.
Sargent's history of Nevada County, one of the earliest annals of this region, had become so scarce a few years ago that even the son of the author did not possess a copy. Through a fortuitous circumstance The Union was able to make a copy available to George C. Sargent and cherished the appreciative letters received from him.
