The last of three children, all daughters, born to Syrena Alice Smidt and husband Hans Berntson. She was born a month after her father's death. Spent earliest years with maternal grandparents, Henry Smidt and Leetha Jane Fenton. Her mother subsequently remarried to Thomas Richards Faull and she moved with them to help with raising their children. Her mother died in 1915. Born Hansena, she disliked the name and chose to be known as Dorothy. She married David Joseph DeClark 3 Jun 1924 and had two sons, Frank David DeClark called "Sonny" or "Dave", and Ronald Richard DeClark.
She and her husband separated and she later lived in Washington and Oregon. She had a stroke at a relatively young age that caused paralysis of her left side. She was working in the ceramics department of Tektronix, Inc. at the time. She regained some use of the leg with a leg brace and was able to walk again. She lived in apartments independently as long as she could and her last few years were spent at Maryville Nursing Home in Beaverton, Oregon.
