Revolutionary War Continental Army Officer. He served as a Captain Spencer's Additional Continental regiment in George Washington's Army, participating the Battles of The Brandywine and Germantown. A prominent Pittsburgh legislator, pioneer, and County Court Judge, he was the father of Senator William Wilkins, and General John Wilkins Jr. Originally interred in Pittsburgh's Presbyterian Burying Ground, the his remains and that of his son John Jr. were re-interreed in Homewood Cemetery in 1882.
