Mr. Elkins, born October 18, 1929, lived most of his early years in Washington, DC. He was the son of the late U.S. Senator Davis Elkins of West Virginia and Marie Reagan Elkins. His grandfather, the late Stephen B. Elkins, and his great-grandfather, the late Henry Gassaway Davis, were also U.S. Senators from West Virginia.
Mr. Elkins was a former Board Member of the Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV and was the Chairman of the Davis Elkins Charitable Foundation, a foundation he set up to aid injured and wounded service men and women in their recovery, and to provide scholarships to those interested in engineering, farming and medicine. Throughout his life, Mr. Elkins was an active investor in West Virginia land, timber and coal properties as well as commercial real estate in Northern Virginia.
Mr. Elkins is survived by two sisters, Katy Kelly of Texas and Maureen Balsam of California, as well as many nieces and nephews. A private service was held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Washington, DC. Memorial donations may be sent to Poor Robert's Charities, 3900-B Watson Place NW, Apt. G2A, Washington, DC 20016.
