US Senator. Born in Bowling Green, Missouri, he was the son of US Senator James Beauchamp Clark. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1912, from the law department of George Washington University in 1914 and was admitted to the bar. During World War I, he served in the US Army, attaining the rank of Colonel. After the war, he commenced the practice of law in St. Louis, Missouri and was author and compiler of several manuals on parliamentary law. In 1932, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Harry B. Hawes and was reelected serving until 1945. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was member on the Board of Regents, Smithsonian Institution and associate justice of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia from 1945 until his death at age 63.
