The son of William & Anna C. Poorman, he married Lydia N. Seiler September 21, 1843, in Harrisburg, and fathered John Henry Clay (b. 08/17/44 - 61st Pa Inf), William A. (b. @1846), Samuel A. (b. @1848), Fannie K. (b. @1852), Rebecca M. (b. 02/14/56 - married a Dickey), James B. (b. @1857), Mary C. (b. 1859), Frank R. (b. 08/23/65), Annie L. (b. @1868), and Bertha (b. 01/15/72 - married Frank L. Davis). In 1860, he was a cabinet maker living in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 8" tall with black hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Pittsburgh August 1, 1861, as a private with Co. K, 61st Pennsylvania Infantry, eventually rising to the rank of sergeant. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Camp Stoneman, Washington DC, February 25, 1865, as a private with Co. B, 2nd U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry. On March 23, he received promotion to sergeant and at that time requested and received a furlough and subsequently an extension. When his regiment moved to Berryville, Virginia, he was still on furlough and erroneously listed as a deserter to date March 31, 1865. Although the error was noted, the wrongful desertion records remain in his compiled military service records. On October 6, 1865, at Elmira, New York, he was promoted to 2nd lieutenant of Co. K, mustered at the rank October 27, and honorably discharged February 19, 1866, his "service no longer required." There are letters lauding his service and recommending him for a commission in the regular army, but that apparently never occurred.

He was a post-war member of Hartranft Post No. 58, G.A.R.. He was found dead in his bed at his Harrisburg home.
